Rescue – An Animal Shelter Theme with Petfinder Support
Rescue is a theme built with one purpose: Getting animals adopted. And on the plus side, your shelter can now have an awesome looking website. Pets can easily be added or you can pull them from your Petfinder profile with a few clicks.
How It Works with Petfinder
Rescue is built with the Petfinder API so you can easily sync your pets from your Petfinder profile to your WordPress install. A recurring script will run in designated intervals to make sure that Rescue always has the most updated information from your shelter’s Petfinder profile. Note that Rescue can only read from Petfinder, it cannot write to it. However, you can create pets solely in Rescue.
Rescue requires PHP version 5.3 or higher.
No Petfinder? No Problem.
While Rescue was made to work with Petfinder, it’s not required. Manually adding pets into Rescue is as simple as adding a post or page.

Is is possible to also filter by tag so you could for example only show Large dogs – http://screencast.com/t/xKBXWXSpsB
Or select multiple tags to filter by Large and House Trained etc.

hi, a presales question i didn’t find the answer to yet: what are the options of categorizing/sorting the pet collection? if you have eg a hundred adoptable animals, could i categorize and or sort them e.g. according age, or gender, or status, or a combination?

ReplyDeleteWe opted to only be able to sort pets by animal type and breed. While you can add all those options (gender, age, etc.), you can’t sort them like that. It’s a feature we want to add, but honestly, it gets very tricky when trying to sort by multiple fields at the same time.
thanks. I see. Type is of course only useful when you offer multiple types (we only do cats), so that leaves only one option. However, i believe this site is made with your template: http://schnauzersplendor.com/siresdams/ and it seems to group the dogs into “sires” and “dams” (males and females i guess). is that not done through functionality you implemented?

No, unfortunately there’s not any more options built into the theme. You could create a page template that grabs the pets by a specific meta key, but it’s not exactly an easy undertaking.
ReplyDeleteone idea: since you do filter on breed and type, could i just give those tags (or categories or whatever they are) another content? E.g. under “species” I create “male” and “female”? Same for breed, where i put the age categories or the color or whatever.
ReplyDeleteYou could do that on Breeds, not on Animal Types (species) as those are not editable (a byproduct from the Petfinder integration). Just note that if you do that, you’ll have have the gender listed twice in the post.

ReplyDeleteThere’s nothing for donations actually built into the theme. So adding a link or a button into the post would be just that. You’d insert the link (or button) right into the editor.
I do have button styles in the theme, so you could put this right in the editor:

Obviously, the href would need to link to wherever you take donations.
This looks great! Is it possible to try before buying? I’d like to use Rescue for an Animal Refuge in Auckland, New Zealand, and would like to set up a demo for them to see if it meets their needs.

1. One of which I believe I found the answer to. I did a search in the comments and saw that if the Petfiner sync is active and if I then edit the animal’s post, that it locks the post and prevents that particular animal from syncing with petfinder, correct?
2. If I have Petfiner sync on, can I also add animals in manually as well?

ReplyDelete1) Yes, that is correct. If you manually add an animal to your site it will not sync with Petfinder. Likewise, if you edit an animal’s post, it will not sync with Petfinder. This is a failsafe to make sure pets created in Rescue that do not exist in Petfinder will not delete when the cron (sync) is run.
2) Yes, you can manually add animals even if your syncing with Petfinder. Those posts just will not sync with Petfinder.

Pre sale question – can you choose what pages show the sidebar?

ReplyDeleteThere is a full width page template included with the theme. However, it cannot be used on every type of page. For example, the All Pets page (and subsquent sub pages) use their own template which includes a sidebar. However, depending on what you’d like to do, we can help you out in the forum if you have questions about a particular template or making adjustments.

Hello. Do you have a detailed documentation? Is the one inside “Help File” index.html? I am trying to set the frontapage but I cannot find any details on how to add the frontapage banner, pets of the month, etc. Also where are the sample files? I ws unable to locate them.

ReplyDeleteYes, the help file is Help File/index.html. The sample files is the rescue.xml in your download folder. You can upload that in your dashboard under Tools > Import.

The site I’m having issues with http://rgtmidlands.co.uk – logo disappeared, menu drop downs not working and the slides won’t load. This happened after I updated to the latest version of wordpress and the theme
ReplyDeleteIt looks like your jquery is not firing correctly, and I know why. It looks like you renamed the rescue theme folder from rescue to rescue 2_0_9. WordPress tends to break if there’s a space in the theme folder name. If you change that back to just rescue, you should be all fixed. You can read about updating the theme if you need help.

That hasn’t worked I’m afraid. I deleted the theme and re uploaded it both via ftp and through the theme admin panel.

ReplyDeleteI’m also wondering if the dog pages are posted as pages or as blog posts? We will handle maybe more than 2000 dog pages, is it possible to keep that somewhat neatly in the way the pet pages is coded? No Pet Finder necessary.
And we need to have page excerpts for co-workers as well. Because we would like to be able to use that template to list co-workers (everyone has their own page) and fundraisers as well.

The dog/animal pages are a custom post type so they are actually separate from pages and posts. You can access them on the dashboard the same as you would a page or post: https://cl.ly/2I1Z072u0D19. Does that help answer your question?

Oh ok, I might have to buy the theme to know if it’s the right one for the shelter I’m helping out. I just don’t want them to spend more money than absolutely neccessary.
ReplyDeleteThe dog pages, if they’re separated it sounds really good! But will the main category “Dogs” be visible in the menu?
I’ve tried to find a way to list excerpts to for example co workers so that they will have their own pages, Co worker 1, Co worker 2 and so on. But instead of linking every co workers page I want one page to have all excerpts and an image will for a catergory of co workers. I’ve seen this has been made for blog posts but I can’t find a way to do this for pages. It looks like the dog pages is coded this way so that’s why I’m asking

ReplyDeleteYes, you can set whatever items you want in the menu. “Dogs” is also a taxonomy so it’s just a matter of adding it to your navigation menus on the Appearance > Menus screen.
For the co-workers pages, is there a reason you wouldn’t want to just create a post for each co-worker and use a specific category like “Staff”? That way, you can add the link to the Staff category in your menu and, when clicked, you’ll see all of the posts associated with that category. Another option would be to create an entire new custom post type of “Staff” but that would require some additional development and/or the use or assistance of a plugin.
As far as another theme is concerned, the pet (dog) posts would not carry over to another theme. That is a custom post type built into the Rescue theme.

Does the theme support breadcrumbs? If not, how hard would it be to add? I am a designer with strong HTML/CSS skills, and have worked some with modifying PHP.

Yes I have setup my petfinder account and have the API and shelter keys in… I run the sync and it shows the pets are syncing but they are not showing up anywhere…

In the demo, are the “featured pets” “newest friends” sections automatic (as in, do they come from the Petfinder integration, or do those items have to be entered manually). I gather from other comments that syncing with Petfinder creates posts in WordPress. When pets are adopted, if this is recorded on PetFinder does this update the post and turn it into an archive of adopted pets? If not, is there a way to change the status or category of the posts so that there is an archive of adoptions?

ReplyDeleteI’ll reply to your questions in order:
1) Featured pets have to be set manually. There is a meta box on every pet post that allows you to specify that the pet is featured and add a short description: https://cl.ly/29052Q0H0j3K
2) Newest friends is populated automatically. This is just a list of the latest animals added to your site either via Petfinder sync or manually added.
3) Yes, the Petfinder sync creates a “pet” post (custom post type) automatically. If you do not wish to use Petfinder, you can create these posts manually.
4) Once an animal is adopted (or removed) from Petfinder, that animal will be removed from Rescue automatically.
There is one exception to this process: if you manually edit an animal’s post on Rescue after it has been synced, that pet will not delete automatically. This is a failsafe to make sure pets created in Rescue that do not exist in Petfinder will not delete when the sync/cron is run.
If you wish to archive “adopted” pets, you’ll need to manually edit those pet posts and add a category of “adopted” (or whatever you decide). This will remove the animal from the Petfinder sync, leaving them on your Rescue site. You can then link to the category archive of “adopted” or your given category. Does this answer your question?
